Physicists and philosophers have long speculated on the idea of the universe being some sort of simulation created by a large and intelligent civilization–because that’s what you would do, right? Create multiple universes of simulations within simulations? The paper ‘Constraints on the Universe as a Numerical Simulation’ by a team at the University of Bonn in Germany claims that there are current simulations of the universe out there, but they are very weak and small, which put limits on physical laws.
The limitations would be from the computer; like a limitation on something like how much energy particles can have–something programmed much like modern technology. Everything in this carefully coded and constructed universe would have these limits, much like our world. Essentially, scientists are claiming that our natural rules of science are just like a computer simulation.
So basically, we might be living in the goddamn Matrix.
Silias Beane, back at the University of Bonn is trying to come up with a way to test this theory based on the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin limit (or the GZK cut-off) value, which deals with these limitations on science. Beane claims that a 3-D space, or, a lattice, which limits the energy.
So what now? Physicists are currently working on a replicated universe on a femto-scale, that’s closer than a nano-scale, with quantum chromodynamics (QCD) which behave interestingly with the GZK.
