Summertime is an excellent opportunity to work on projects around the house and tackle maintenance issues you might have been putting off all summer. There are several manly tasks that can be completed over a weekend or in just a few hours. It’s a great time to call some of your friends together to help out and then enjoy some cold beverages at the end of the day.
1. Build a deck
If you enjoy BBQ’s with family and friends and admiring the view from your backyard, consider building a deck for the perfect outdoor entertaining space. You might need to gather some of your buddies for help and to cut down on the amount of time it takes to build. First, purchase the lumber and hardware you need. Second, watch some YouTube videos on how to build a deck. Third, construct the deck and plan your first party.
2. Clean gutters
Although not a glamorous job, cleaning the gutters is a manly activity that can also save you money on future home repairs. Even if your gutters are in good shape, leaves and debris can clog the spouts and make it difficult for water to drain. You can easily clean the gutters by climbing up on a ladder and scooping out the leaves and putting them in a bucket. Once the gutters are cleaned out, use a garden hose to make sure there are no clogs or blockages.
3. Update HVAC system
Depending on how long you have owned your home, you might need to consider updating your HVAC system. If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably not running as efficiently as a newer model. Before the weather gets sweltering hot and you find out your A/C doesn’t work – schedule an HVAC technician to come out and take a look. Some units just need a good cleaning and maintenance, but you might also want to look at the new Energy Star-rated models that will save you money on your utility bills.
4. Replace light fixtures
You can also save some money by replacing outdated light fixtures both inside and outside of your home. If you own an older home, you might also want to check the wiring and make sure it is up to code. Next, you can ask your significant other to help you choose new fixtures that are stylish and match your home’s décor. Ceiling fans can also help circulate the air and make your HVAC system work more efficiently.
5. Add storage to the garage
Many homes never seem to have enough storage, but adding cabinets or shelving to the garage can solve this problem. You can usually create some heavy-duty shelves with some 2 x 4 lumber and plywood. You will want to measure the totes and boxes that will be sitting on the shelves to make sure they are the right height and width. Then use screws to attach the shelves to the wall of the garage and you will be amazed by the amount of space you have to buy more tools and manly toys.
