In this article, we will explore some advice regarding how to get back to driving after a time. One can end not driving in a very long time for many different reasons. For example, because you have just passed the test but don’t have the money for a car yet, or maybe your workplace is only accessible by public transport, or possibly you didn’t enjoy driving and wanted to take a break.
The reasons you may need or want to be behind the wheel again can be multiple too, and start from scratch can be quite challenging. The good news is if you are interested in coming back, and you legally still hold a driving license, there is a lot that you can do to hop in and drive with the confidence that you once had.
We have discussed with the team at EasyPass what advice they usually give to people in this situation, and we have come with four key areas to be considered.
Getting back to basics
Now that time has passed, you may find that things are not how they used to be. Roads have changed, rules are not the same, there is more traffic on the roads, and all these can make you feel unsure of your skills. But you only need to know how to work on them.
Refresh your theoretical knowledge
One of the best things you can do to safe driving again is to take a refresher course. The best thing is that you don’t need to pass a test and the end of it. These courses are available in different driving schools around the country, and you should be able to find a suitable one near you.
A course like this will surely help you build your confidence back, and also it will teach you how to develop your driving skills with modern cars and roads, helping you to drive more efficiently and more in tune with this new environment.
Once behind the wheel
After taking your refresher course, you are going to find yourself behind the wheel again. Our recommendation is for you to start with a few short drives around your neighborhood, away from busy roads until you start feeling more confident. However, if after practising by yourself, you feel like your driving skills are not 100% as they used to be, you may want to look for professional advice.
Some tips for your driving
- Avoid distractions. As when we first started to drive so many years ago, you may feel that the minimum sound could make you lose your concentration on your driving. So, if this is the case, you may ask your passengers not to talk to you while driving. Not playing your music hits on the radio is possibly a good idea too.
- Take your time. It is normal not to feel 100% ready to drive in some circumstances like in roundabouts, motorways, carriageways, and so forth. In these situations, you may stick to roads that are not so busy for some time, and begin to challenge your driving skills step by step. Also try to drive at different times of the day, because driving at night, for example, could present a new challenge for you.
- You’ll get there. Rebuilding your confidence will take you some time and a lot of practice, so take it day to day basis. Practise makes perfect, and before you know it, you’ll be driving as if you haven’t taken that break.
