The Ultimate Home Maintenance Checklist

Being a homeowner can be overwhelming. There are so many things to account for, and if something breaks, you’re responsible for fixing it. To make your life a little easier, we’ve compiled a list of items that should be on your home maintenance checklist.

Manage Your Garden

Your garden is one of the first things guests will notice when they visit your home, so make sure it’s getting the attention it deserves. You should be aerating the lawn each year, and rake the leaves regularly so your plants have the best chance of growing. To save yourself some time from planting new plants every year, pick up some perennials that will come back every year. Also, make sure you remember to turn off the garden hoses and insulate your pipes when winter comes.

Check Your Deck and Patio

To be certain your patio and deck are being maintained, check them at the beginning of every season. The changing weather patterns can erode small pieces and weaken areas that may be overlooked normally, but those tiny fractures can quickly turn into a big issue. Fix any problems as soon as you can, and be sure to give your decks a new coating of stain in the spring. The protective layer will help slow down any weather erosion.

Maintain Your HVAC System

Your HVAC system is one of the most important components of your house. Without it, you and your family would be pretty miserable, so get it serviced regularly. An experienced technician will be able to spot problems before they arise, saving your family money in the future. To help extend the life of your HVAC system, be sure to change filters as directed.

Inspect Your Roof

Your roof isn’t something you usually think of unless there’s a problem, but it’s the first line of defense between your family and nature. You should be inspecting your roof on an annual basis, but you should also check it after big storms. Be aware that animals will sometimes make their homes in your roof if there is a part that they’re able to crawl under, so it’s important to ensure that there are no spaces for them to move into.

Examine Your Appliances

We take our appliances for granted. When we go to the store, we just assume our refrigerator will be working and able to keep our groceries cool when we return. But if you’ve ever been in the scenario where an appliance you needed to rely on broke, then you know you never want to be in that situation again. Be proactive and check that all of them are running smoothly. Make sure that they aren’t overheating, and clean them regularly.

Checking off the above list each year will go a long way in preserving your home and giving you the peace of mind necessary to rest easy. You should be able to take pride in your home and know that you’re doing everything you can to maintain it.
