What to Consider When Renovating a Log Cabin

If you have recently purchased an older log cabin, then you may have some renovations you need to take care of. Renovating a log cabin can be fun and exciting as you start to make it your own space and customize it to you and your family’s needs, but there are some aspects of renovating that you will need to consider while you’re making your plan.

Remember, a log cabin is probably a bit different than what you’re used to with your home in the city, but some of the typical renovation needs still apply. Learn more about what you need to do to keep your log cabin looking great for years into the future.

Make sure the roof is updated.

No matter what type of roof the cabin may have, it needs to be updated periodically. Ask a service provider like the Bethesda roofing company to inspect the shingles or other roofing material to make sure that it’s sound. If it isn’t, you will need to have a contractor either repair it or replace it with a new roof. Roof repair is very important, especially if this is a vacation home for you and you are not there all the time. A sound roof protects the cabin from water leaks and any subsequent water damage.

On average, a shingle roof should last you about 15-20 years. If your roof is any older than that, you may have problems getting an insurance company to cover your property. You should also check the soffit and make sure to clean out the gutters so that water overflow doesn’t damage your roof. With any contractor, it’s recommended to check their Better Business Bureau profile before you hire them.

Find a reputable tree removal company.

One of the great things about living in the woods is being surrounded by beautiful, tall trees. Sometimes, however, those trees can become sick or die, leaving you with a safety risk on your property and a liability suit waiting to happen if you rent out your cabin to people on vacation. Make sure you have a licensed tree removal specialist on speed dial in the event that you need to have a tree removed. Typically, tree removal costs between $100 to $1,700 depending on the size of the tree and where it is located. Some trees are more difficult to remove than others and could require more labor and time. If you want the stump ground down as well, that may be an additional service fee.

Keep an eye out for local wildlife.

While it is encouraged to let local wildlife go about their business and not disrupt them, they may end up getting too close to your house, your kids, or you. If they become too comfortable with humans, they may need to be removed from your property and relocated to an entirely different area. Nuisance animals can cause damage to your cabin or other things outside. To remove those, you may need to look into trapping prices and find a company near you with proper licensing and good ratings that will humanely get them off of your property. Common types of animals that may cause issues on your property include:

  • Red fox
  • Lynx
  • Beaver
  • Bobcat
  • Muskrat
  • Mink
  • Coyote
  • Elk
  • Raccoon
  • Otter

You may also want to get a fishing license or hunting license if you are going to be out in nature a lot. Fishing could be a good way to relieve the stress of city life or find a catch for that evening’s dinner. For hunting, you might be able to get a pheasant, elk, or migratory waterfowl that will provide you and your family with a good meal.
